Chicago: City Hotels and Accommodation
The hustle and bustle of downtown Chicago has attracted visitors for many years and contains a wealth of accommodation options. Just 18 miles / 29 km to the southeast of Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), the city is divided into a number of notable districts, all of which contain more than their fair share of hotels and affordable lodging. Hotel rates tend to be at their highest during the summer high season, falling sharply in the winter months.
Major events in Chicago can greatly influence the availability of accommodation, with hotel rooms often filling quickly. Noteworthy festivals include the Blues Festival, Country Music Festival, Pride Parade and Taste of Chicago, all of which take place during the month of June. The Jazz Festival in September is also extremely popular and Chicago's longest-running event of its kind.
The Loop
The true heart of the city, this region is named after its circling streets and remains busy both day and night, with a number of noteworthy theaters and clubs. The HI Chicago Hostel is particularly appealing to budget travelers and can be found along East Congress Parkway. Mid-range accommodation nearby includes a number of popular hotels, such as the Essex Inn and the Best Western Grant Park Inn, both of which can be found along South Michigan Avenue, close to a host of shops and restaurants.
North and Gold Coast
Containing several notable points of interest, the northern area of Chicago includes the acclaimed Magnificent Mile, Navy Pier, Children's Museum and Tribune Tower, all of which offer a range of nearby hotels. Further accommodation lies along the acclaimed Gold Coast, together with many grand mansions and affluent neighborhoods. Much of this area is dominated by the John Hancock Center, which towers high above the area and offers impressive views from its observatory deck, tending to be quieter than the more famous Willis Tower (formerly the Sears). Hotels in this area of Chicago are close to a host of attractions, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art and the International Museum of Surgical Science.
Noteworthy hotels in this lively Chicago neighborhood include the Ohio House Motel and the Howard Johnson Inn, both of which are located along North LaSalle Street. Also worth considering, the Best Western River North lies on West Ohio Street, close to Ohio House.
